Donald Scott Obituary

Donald J. Scott passed away suddenly at home on February 4, 2024.  He was born October 15,1954 to Mildred (Keefer) Scott and Donald Scott at Akron City Hospital.

Don knew who he was. He was a man of few words unless he had something to add to the conversation. He graduated from North High School where he met his lifetime close friends Pat, Joe and Mike. Once he told his wife that he and his buddies attempted to steal a chair from a motel!  The police came and he was released to his mom’s custody. A chair?! A quiet guy but not above a little mischief.

He read widely throughout his life. He was an armchair (recliner, really) Jeopardy! champion.  How he tackled categories such as Philosophers, 18th Century Composers and Greek mythology no one knows. His answer to his wife was usually, “Dear I don’t know where I learned this fact. I just know.”  He always said this with a slight grin and fake modesty. That was Don.

Besides reading he was a devoted fan of Blues music and legendary guitarist Jeff Beck. He had an encyclopedic mind for the music. Once at a Friday Night TGIF outside in Cuyahoga Falls, Don answered the DJ’s question to win a prize. The DJ said to Don: wow - you are a rock n’ roll librarian!

He met his wife Virginia at a cast party held at fellow acting student/now sister-in-law Nancy’s off campus rental house. They met “across a crowded room” and married three years and 4 days on April 28, 1990.

Don and Virginia did not share many of the common interests such as the liking the same movies, music, TV shows and the like. But they shared the same value system of trust, faith in each other and the future, and belief in God. They were a team.

Beside his parents, he was predeceased by his Aunt Fern and Uncle Edwin, cousins Rosemary Evelsizer and Margaret Dodge, his nephew Steve Zook, mother-in-law Ann Sheil, sister-in-law Luanne Sheil Dunlop (Bob), friend Patrick McKeivier, and family cats, Murphy and Matilda.

He is survived by his loving wife Virginia, devoted sister Nancy Jones, caring brother Charles Zook (Sunnie), nephew Chris Zook (Pelin Batur) and children Bora, Azra and Ajda; niece Teresa (Todd) Martter and children Alyssa and Keira. He is also survived by special friends Joe Guistino (Gina) and Mike Scarpetti (Paula), and many other good neighbors and friends. Finally, he is also survived by Agent Cooper, guardian cat of Verde Avenue.

A funeral Mass will be held on April 4, 2024 at 11 am at St. Sebastian’s Church, 476 Mull Ave, Akron OH 44320. Visitation is 10 am in church vestibule until Mass. Luncheon follows at Swisler Hall.
